THP is an intensive case-management based program for people wanting to make a significant change in their lives. Families in the Transitional Housing Program are expected to work on goals toward self-sufficiency by participating in case management bi-weekly. Case management may assume many forms: budgeting, family counseling, referrals to needed services, life skills training, broadening education and employment opportunities, and support.
This program provides homeless families with adequate housing for up to two years based on their ability and willingness to meet program guidelines. There are income guidelines to meet (less than 125% of poverty level at intake and up to 185% of poverty once they are enrolled in THP housing). In addition, adult applicants must be working full-time or attending school and working at least part-time. Rent is based on a tenant’s net income. Tenants pay 30% of their net income unless that amount is less than the minimum or more than the maximum program fee which is usually in the range of $300 – $550. Also, utilities (electric, gas, and water) are the tenant’s responsibility.
Interested families are encouraged to complete an application that can be obtained at our office at 1301 W. Washington St., in Bloomington, IL. Once completed and returned, your application will be kept on file. When a vacancy suitable for your needs becomes available in the Transitional Housing program, you will be notified. At that time you will be invited to attend an orientation workshop. If still interested, you may schedule an appointment with the THP case manager. After interviewing eligible applicants, a family will be chosen based on the assessment interviews.
