October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month! Join us on October 17th as we Take Steps to End Domestic Violence.

In memory of Duncan and Jack Leichtenberg, and in honor of Duncan’s 11th birthday, we invite you to support Mid Central Community Action’s Countering Domestic Violence program as we run, walk, roll or ride the one-mile trail through beautiful Tipton Park, Bloomington. And we don’t want our four-legged friends to miss out – what a great excuse to give your dog a workout too!

You can choose to participate in a 5K run or a 1 mile family walk, and in honor of Duncan’s 11th birthday, kids 11 and under can participate for free.

See our events page for more details, and to register.  See you on the Trail!

A Midsummer Night's DreamOn Friday, June 18th, starting at around 5:30pm, the ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel in Bloomington, IL, will be transformed into a magical place where you will learn that dreams really do come true!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Dreams in Action is the theme for this year’s fundraising dinner and award celebration. You’ll hear stories of how the people we serve have overcome seeming insurmountable obstacles to enable them to live the lives they dreamed of. Our mission to promote safe and stable families, neighborhoods and communities is truly realized in these stories – the award winners have all worked hard, stayed focused on their goals, and maybe there was just a little pinch of fairy dust involved!

Of course, these success stories are just a part of the celebrations! For the first time, we will be providing a full night of entertainment! Looking for somewhere to dance on Friday night? We have you covered! Not one, but two local bands will be entertaining the dining crowd. Touch of Soul will kick off the evening, and we’ll close out with a three-hour set by Soft Spoken.

You really don’t want to miss this!

Please look for more details on the event page!

It’s almost time for our annual fundraising dinner!

On Friday, June 18th, you can enjoy a wonderful dinner at the Doubletree Hotel in Bloomington. As you dine, you will be entertained by the ever-popular Touch of Soul. Following the presentation of the Dreamweaver Awards, please feel free to extend your visit with us as we treat you to the local talent of Soft Spoken.

The Midsummer Night’s Dream themed event celebrates “dreams in action” – the journeys that our award winners have taken to get them to a place where they are gaining control, they are self-reliant, and they are safe.

Watch for more details coming very soon!

On Sunday April 11, F.L.A.M.E., Phi Sigma Pi, Red Tassel/Mortar Board, and Sigma Sigma Sigma will host a 3 on 3 basketball tournament to benefit the Neville House in Bloomington.

Here are the details these organizations have posted about this event!

The cost to participate is $5 a person, $15 for the team.
There are 3 brackets, men’s, women’s and coed.
There will be prizes from local businesses for the winners of each bracket, as well as trophies for first place, and medals for second.

You might be wondering what the Neville House is.
The Neville House is a shelter for victims of Domestic Violence in Bloomington, IL.
It runs 24 hours a day and never turns anyone away. It provides counseling for women and children, as well as housing.
They have an on staff clinician to help kids and women with issues surrounding divorce.
They have 13 beds and 4 cribs, but they don’t turn anyone away and have worked out a deal with a local hotel to handle overflow, which costs about $55 a night for a family of 4.
Because of the economic down turn, there has been a decrease in funding and a huge increase in need for Neville House services.

Print this registration form and bring it to the tournament that day, or drop it off in the Student Involvement Center in an envelope for Phi Sigma Pi’s mailbox: http://www.isupsp.org/events.html
Registration will start at 12 that day, and the tournament at one. If you register early you will be one of the first teams playing.

T shirts will be available for purchase the day of the event. As soon as the logo has been designed, pictures will be up.

Please come out and help support this great cause!

The competition is over for this year, please look for the 2010 Uptown Downtown Scavenger Hunt in the Fall.

Congratulations to 2009 Uptown Downtown Scavenger Hunt winners:
The Inner Circle!

Do you think you know Bloomington and Normal?

How familiar are you with the buildings and sites that surround you?

Do you know where this photo was taken?

If you were given a series of 100 photographs, and two weeks to locate them all, we think you would learn a lot more about the Twin Cities than you think you may already know!

Are you up for the challenge?

Here’s how it works. First, you will need to get together a group of friends. Five is ideal.

Register your team with Mid Central Community Action, Inc. and pay the entry fee of  $100 (that’s just $20 per person for a team of 5!)

Very ornate, but do you know where it is?

Your team will receive a spiral bound book with 100 photographs of various sites, buildings, landmarks and signs in Bloomington and Normal. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to identify as many of those photographs as possible.

The winning team will receive a grand prize of $500, and be crowned the Uptown Downtown Scavenger Hunt Champions of 2009!
Will you accept the challenge?
